Chapter Six
It has been said that kisses never lie. Whether he wants it to or not, a man’s personality is revealed by his kiss…which is why I’m conducting this survey and test. But what if the woman has something to hide? Does her kiss convey her deception and subsequent guilt? For now, at least, I hope not.
‘‘T hat went well despite a few unexpected improvisations on your part,’’ Hunter said as he gathered up their tennis rackets and balls.
Julie’s first impulse was to rise to her defense with an explanation of why she had deviated from their script. But more pressing was the niggling sense of guilt that haunted her. ‘‘How do you do it?’’ she asked. ‘‘How do you resolve having to lie to people?’’
Hunter bounced a lime-green ball on the ground as the next players took their places on the court. ‘‘It’s not really lying if your ultimate goal is to bring the truth to light,’’ he said. ‘‘The first thing you have to do is take your heart out of it. You have to focus on the positive results rather than the means by which you get them.’’ He caught the ball with a quick downward grab, then tossed it to her. ‘‘As long as you’re not breaking any laws, you’re in the clear.’’
He was right. She hadn’t broken any laws. But she had betrayed his trust. And that fact was weighing heavily on her mind.
Julie peeled the plastic lid off the can and dropped the tennis ball inside. If she wanted to be successful in her job, both current and future, she would have to develop a thicker hide…and learn to put results before methods. In an effort to appease her guilt, she told herself she was acting, not lying, and that the experience would help her with her future reporting job.
‘‘The important thing,’’ Hunter continued, ‘‘is that we got them on videotape.’’ He flashed her a genuine smile that she had difficulty returning.
‘‘But I liked Mrs. Ramsey. She gave me her phone number and told me to keep in touch.’’
Hunter’s gaze darkened. ‘‘She wasn’t the only one passing along phone numbers.’’
He seemed angry, which was surprising considering his earlier satisfaction at having cinched this case.
‘‘I thought you said the method didn’t matter, as long as the desired results were achieved. So it shouldn’t matter that I ditched the married act and let those guys give me their phone numbers.’’
Sheesh, what was his problem, anyway? As much as she would have liked following through on the attraction that seemed to buzz between her and Hunter, he seemed almost to push her away at times. He was a man—virile, strong and proud—so his interest in her may have been merely physical. With Julie, it was that and much more. He excited her in a way that no man had ever done before. He stimulated her intellectually, he made her laugh at times—usually when he least intended it—and, despite their occasional moments of friction, she knew she could count on him in times of need.
